About SAP

SAP is one of the world’s leading enterprise software companies, providing technology that helps organisations manage finance, procurement, human resources, supply chains, customer experience and other critical business processes.

Founded in Germany in 1972, SAP established a global reputation through enterprise resource planning, or ERP, before expanding into cloud applications, data platforms and artificial intelligence. Today, the company positions itself at the intersection of business and technology.

From Five Founders to an Enterprise Software Leader

SAP was founded on April 1, 1972, by five former IBM employees: Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Claus Wellenreuther, Klaus Tschira and Hans-Werner Hector.

Their goal was to develop software capable of integrating business processes and processing information in real time rather than through slower batch systems.

SAP later established a global standard for ERP through systems including SAP R/2 and SAP R/3, allowing organisations to connect major business functions through integrated software.

This foundation eventually evolved into SAP’s current generation of cloud-based business applications.

Moving Enterprise Systems to the Cloud

Cloud computing has become central to SAP’s transformation.

Its modern portfolio connects applications, data and technology across areas including finance, supply chain, procurement, human resources and customer management.

SAP’s cloud ERP solutions provide organisations with a digital core for managing business operations while supporting automation, analytics and artificial intelligence.

The broader SAP Business Suite brings applications, enterprise data and AI together so companies can manage processes through a more integrated technology environment.

Business AI and Joule

Artificial intelligence has become one of SAP’s most important strategic priorities.

Joule, originally introduced as SAP’s generative AI copilot, is integrated across SAP applications to help users access information, analyse business situations and complete tasks through natural-language interaction.

SAP has since expanded this concept toward AI agents capable of working across different business functions and workflows.

Because these AI capabilities operate alongside enterprise data and business processes, SAP is focusing particularly on AI that understands organisational context rather than functioning as a standalone general-purpose tool.

Toward the Autonomous Enterprise

In 2026, SAP introduced its vision of the Autonomous Enterprise — an environment where people provide direction while governed AI agents execute increasingly complex business processes.

The strategy combines the SAP Business AI Platform with SAP’s applications, data and AI agents.

SAP says the platform brings together business data, process knowledge and governance so AI can operate across areas such as finance, procurement, supply chains, human resources and customer experience while maintaining human oversight.

This represents a significant shift from using AI mainly to provide recommendations toward using it to perform selected enterprise tasks and coordinate workflows.

Data as the Foundation for AI

SAP’s AI strategy is closely connected to enterprise data.

SAP Business Data Cloud is designed to bring together SAP and non-SAP data while preserving the business context needed for analytics and artificial intelligence.

This is particularly important for large organisations, where information may be distributed across finance systems, supply chains, human resources platforms and external applications.

By connecting trusted business data with AI, SAP aims to help organisations generate insights and automate processes without separating intelligence from the systems where business information already exists.

A Strong Presence Across Asia Pacific

Asia Pacific is an important region for SAP’s cloud and AI strategy.

As of July 2026, SAP reported more than 33,000 employees across 46 offices and SAP Labs locations in Asia Pacific, with market units covering Australia and New Zealand, Greater China, India, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.

Major Asian organisations using or expanding SAP technologies include companies such as Hyundai AutoEver, Haier, NTT DATA, Kirin Holdings, Itochu and Tech Mahindra.

The region is also important to SAP’s development of cloud ERP and Business AI as Asian companies modernise manufacturing, finance, logistics and other mission-critical operations.

Growth Through Cloud and AI

SAP’s financial performance increasingly reflects its transition toward cloud-based business models.

For 2025, SAP reported total revenue of approximately €36.8 billion, while cloud revenue reached €21.0 billion, up from €17.1 billion in 2024.

Growth continued in the first half of 2026. In the second quarter, SAP reported 22% cloud revenue growth and 25% growth in Cloud ERP Suite revenue year over year. Its current cloud backlog reached €22.9 billion.

These results demonstrate how cloud computing and AI are becoming increasingly important to SAP’s business alongside its established enterprise software portfolio.
