About Visa

Visa is one of the world’s leading digital payments technology companies, connecting consumers, merchants, financial institutions and governments across more than 200 countries and territories.

Visa is not a bank. It does not issue cards, extend credit or determine the interest rates and fees charged to Visa account holders. Instead, its technology and network help financial institutions and merchants securely authorise, clear and settle transactions.

From BankAmericard to Visa

Visa’s history began in 1958, when Bank of America launched BankAmericard, a consumer credit-card programme featuring revolving credit.

The network expanded internationally in 1974 and introduced debit capabilities in 1975.

In 1976, BankAmericard was renamed Visa, creating a name designed to work consistently across languages and markets.

A major corporate restructuring followed in 2007, when regional Visa businesses were combined to form Visa Inc. The company subsequently went public in 2008.

The Network Behind Digital Payments

At the centre of Visa’s business is VisaNet, its global electronic payments network.

VisaNet facilitates transaction processing, primarily through authorisation, clearing and settlement, connecting issuing and acquiring financial institutions with merchants and consumers.

This infrastructure allows Visa payments to work across physical cards, smartphones, online stores, digital wallets and other payment environments.

Operating at Global Scale

Visa’s network operates at enormous scale.

For fiscal 2025, Visa reported:

  • US$14.2 trillion in payments volume
  • 257.5 billion transactions processed on Visa’s networks
  • approximately 4.9 billion payment credentials
  • US$40.0 billion in net revenue

Payments volume increased from US$13.2 trillion in fiscal 2024, while processed transactions increased from 233.8 billion.

These figures reflect the role Visa plays in connecting financial institutions, merchants and consumers across the global economy.

Security and Artificial Intelligence

Security is a core part of Visa’s payment infrastructure.

The company uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse transactions, identify suspicious activity and help financial institutions prevent fraud.

In fiscal 2025, Visa reported that it blocked nearly twice as many fraudulent e-commerce transactions as in the previous year while reducing e-commerce fraud rates across its ecosystem by 8%.

Visa has also invested heavily in technology and infrastructure as payment fraud, scams and cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated.

Preparing for AI-Powered Commerce

Visa is extending its network into a new area: commerce involving AI agents.

Introduced in 2025, Visa Intelligent Commerce is designed to help AI-powered services securely search, select and potentially purchase products on behalf of consumers with appropriate permissions and controls.

The system combines tokenised payment credentials, authentication and Visa’s security infrastructure to help make AI-initiated transactions safer and more transparent.

In 2026, Visa continued expanding this strategy with new agentic-commerce capabilities as AI becomes increasingly involved in how consumers discover and purchase products.

Asia Pacific and Singapore

Asia Pacific is an important region for Visa’s global operations.

Visa operates across markets including Australia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Taiwan, among others.

Singapore serves as Visa’s Asia-Pacific headquarters and regional business hub. Visa also operates a transaction-processing facility in Singapore supporting clients, cardholders and merchants across the region.

In 2026, Visa strengthened its Asia-Pacific leadership structure, with particular emphasis on expanding value-added services and growth across Southeast Asia.

Continuing Growth in 2026

Visa continued recording strong transaction and revenue growth during fiscal 2026.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Visa reported:

  • US$11.6 billion in net revenue, up 14% year over year
  • 71.7 billion processed transactions, up 10%
  • 10% growth in payments volume on a constant-dollar basis
  • 13% growth in total cross-border volume on a constant-dollar basis

The results demonstrate continued growth in digital payments and cross-border commerce across Visa’s network.

Why Visa Is Featured on ASIA Best Brands

Visa demonstrates how technology can connect consumers, merchants and financial institutions across borders through a common digital-payment infrastructure.

From the launch of BankAmericard in 1958 and the creation of the Visa brand in 1976 to VisaNet, digital wallets, AI-powered fraud prevention and intelligent commerce, the company has continually evolved alongside changing payment behaviour.

Its substantial presence throughout Asia Pacific, with Singapore serving as its regional headquarters, also makes the region important to Visa’s continuing development.
