About Booking.com

Booking.com is one of the world’s leading digital travel platforms, connecting travellers with accommodation, flights, car rentals, attractions and airport taxis.

Founded in Amsterdam in 1996, Booking.com has grown from a small Dutch startup into a global travel marketplace. The platform is available in 43 languages and currently reports more than 28 million accommodation listings, including over 6.6 million homes, apartments and other unique places to stay.

From Dutch Startup to Global Travel Platform

Booking.com began in 1996 as Bookings.nl, created to help travellers find and reserve accommodation online.

By 2005, the company had expanded across several European markets. Priceline — now Booking Holdings — acquired Bookings.nl that year and combined it with Active Hotels in 2006 to create the Booking.com business recognised today.

The development reflected a wider shift in travel, as consumers increasingly moved from traditional travel agencies toward online search and direct digital booking.

Accommodation at the Centre

Accommodation remains at the heart of Booking.com.

The platform connects travellers with hotels, resorts, apartments, holiday homes, hostels and other types of stays while giving accommodation providers access to an international customer base.

Booking.com states that it offers more than 28 million reported accommodation listings and supports travellers with 24/7 customer service.

Verified guest reviews are also central to the platform: Booking.com allows reviews from customers who have first made a reservation and completed their stay.

Expanding Beyond Accommodation

Booking.com has progressively expanded into other parts of the travel journey.

Its platform now includes flights, car rentals, attractions and airport taxis, allowing travellers to organise multiple elements of a trip through the same brand.

Flights have become an important part of this expansion. Through its partnership with Etraveli Group, Booking.com’s flight offering was available in 57 countries by June 2025. The companies extended their partnership for another eight years to support further growth.

This broader approach supports Booking.com’s ambition to reduce friction across different stages of travel rather than focusing exclusively on hotel reservations.

AI and Smarter Travel Planning

Booking.com has used machine learning for years to improve search results, recommendations and other parts of the customer experience.

In 2023, it introduced an AI Trip Planner, combining Booking.com’s existing recommendation technology with large language models to allow travellers to explore destinations and accommodation through conversational queries.

The company expanded its AI tools in 2025 with Smart Messenger, Auto-Reply, AI Trip Support, AI Voice Support and AI-powered flight summaries. These tools are designed to simplify communication, customer service and travel decision-making.

From Generative AI to Agentic Travel Tools

Booking.com is increasingly embedding AI directly into different stages of the travel journey.

Smart Messenger can gather reservation and property information to assist accommodation partners in responding to guests, while Auto-Reply can automatically handle selected questions. Early tests of these tools produced a 73% increase in partner satisfaction compared with previous messaging tools.

In 2026, Booking.com also expanded AI capabilities for car rentals. Its app integration with ChatGPT allows users globally to describe the type of rental car they need and browse relevant Booking.com options before continuing to the platform to complete their reservation.

These developments show how Booking.com is moving from simple online search toward more conversational and personalised travel assistance.

A Strong Presence Across Asia Pacific

Asia Pacific is an important part of Booking.com’s international network.

Booking.com currently lists offices across markets including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Singapore serves as the company’s Asia-Pacific hub, supporting teams across areas including finance, engineering and regional operations.

The company’s presence across the region reflects the importance of Asia’s large domestic and international travel markets, as well as the region’s strong adoption of mobile and digital travel services.

A Global Brand With Local Support

Booking.com B.V. remains headquartered in Amsterdam.

The company states that it is supported internationally by 198 offices across more than 70 countries, allowing it to work with accommodation partners and travellers in markets around the world.

Its wider careers network identifies major hubs in Amsterdam, Manchester, Tel Aviv, Singapore, New York and Shanghai, highlighting the international infrastructure behind the platform.

Booking.com is part of Booking Holdings Inc., which also owns brands including Agoda, Priceline, KAYAK and OpenTable.

Booking.com and Booking Holdings

Booking.com is the largest travel brand within Booking Holdings, but the two should not be treated as the same company.

Booking Holdings publishes consolidated financial results covering its portfolio of brands rather than providing complete standalone revenue figures for Booking.com.

For this reason, financial figures such as Booking Holdings’ total revenue, gross bookings and room nights should be described as Booking Holdings figures, not Booking.com-only performance.

This distinction is important when evaluating the scale of the Booking.com brand accurately.

Why Booking.com Is Featured on ASIA Best Brands
