About LEGO
LEGO is one of the world’s most recognisable toy brands, built around a simple system of interlocking bricks that encourages creativity, construction and imaginative play.
Founded in Denmark in 1932, the LEGO Group remains privately held and controlled by the Kirk Kristiansen family. Its products are sold in more than 120 countries worldwide.
From Wooden Toys to the LEGO Brick
The LEGO Group was founded in Billund in 1932 by carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen, who initially produced wooden toys.
The name LEGO comes from the Danish words “leg godt,” meaning “play well.”
The company began experimenting with plastic building elements in the late 1940s. In 1958, the modern LEGO brick design with its interlocking tube system was perfected, establishing the foundation of the LEGO System in Play used today.
A System Designed for Creativity

One of LEGO’s greatest strengths is compatibility.
A modern LEGO brick remains part of a wider building system that allows pieces from different themes and generations to connect, giving builders the freedom to dismantle, rebuild and create something entirely new.
This concept has expanded into themes ranging from LEGO City and Technic to Icons, Star Wars, Botanicals and NINJAGO.
In 2025, LEGO launched its largest product portfolio to date, with more than 860 products, around half of which were new.
Building for Children and Adults
LEGO has increasingly broadened its appeal beyond traditional children’s toys.
Complex architecture, vehicles, botanical models and entertainment partnerships have helped attract adult builders, collectors and hobbyists while the core portfolio continues to serve younger audiences.
Popular themes in 2025 included LEGO City, Technic, Star Wars, Icons and Botanicals, reflecting the brand’s ability to reach different ages and interests.
Connecting Physical and Digital Play

Digital experiences are becoming a larger part of the LEGO ecosystem.
The company has developed games and physical products around franchises including Minecraft, Super Mario and Fortnite. By 2025, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey had accumulated more than one billion player hours since launch.
In 2026, the LEGO Group introduced LEGO SMART Play, a technology platform designed to bring more interactive features into physical LEGO play. Its early applications included LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Pokémon.
This approach allows LEGO to explore digital technology without moving away from hands-on construction and creativity.
Partnerships Across Global Culture
Entertainment and sports partnerships have become an important part of LEGO’s growth.
Recent collaborations have included Star Wars, Formula 1, FIFA World Cup 2026, Pokémon and KPop Demon Hunters, alongside LEGO’s own properties such as NINJAGO.
These partnerships allow LEGO to transform familiar stories, characters and cultural moments into physical building experiences while reaching new audiences.
Building With More Sustainable Materials
The LEGO Group is investing in reducing its dependence on virgin fossil-based materials.
In 2025, the company estimated that 52% of the raw materials purchased to make LEGO bricks came from renewable and recycled sources, up from 33% in 2024. This figure includes certified mass-balance materials as well as physically segregated renewable or recycled content.
LEGO is also replacing single-use plastic pre-pack bags with paper-based alternatives. By 2025, 56% of its global packaging lines had converted to the new paper-based solution.
Asia Pacific and the Vietnam Expansion
Asia Pacific is increasingly important to LEGO’s manufacturing and supply-chain strategy.
In April 2025, the company opened a US$1 billion factory in Vietnam, its sixth factory worldwide and second in Asia after its manufacturing site in China.
The 44-hectare Vietnam facility was designed to support long-term Asia-Pacific growth and includes 12,400 rooftop solar panels. It is also LEGO’s first factory to exclusively use paper-based pre-pack bags.
A new regional distribution centre in Vietnam began serving markets including Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with India, Indonesia and other markets planned for further integration.
The company also maintains operations across Asian markets including China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.
Record Growth in 2026
The LEGO Group achieved record results in 2025, reporting:
- DKK 83.5 billion in revenue
- DKK 22.0 billion in operating profit
- DKK 16.7 billion in net profit
- 16% growth in consumer sales
Growth accelerated in the first half of 2026. Revenue increased 21% to DKK 41.9 billion, while operating profit rose 22% to DKK 10.9 billion.
Consumer sales grew 22%, with particularly strong momentum in Asia Pacific, the Americas, Western Europe and CEEMEA.
By mid-2026, LEGO also operated 1,106 branded stores worldwide and employed around 34,000 people.
