About PayPal

PayPal is one of the world’s leading digital payments and commerce platforms, enabling consumers and businesses to pay, receive money, shop and sell across digital channels.

Its wider ecosystem includes PayPal, Venmo, Braintree, Xoom and Hyperwallet. At the end of 2025, PayPal reported 439 million active accounts across approximately 200 markets.

From Online Payments to Global Commerce

PayPal traces its origins to 1998, when it emerged during the early development of internet-based payments.

The company later became part of eBay before separating again in July 2015, allowing PayPal to operate as an independent publicly traded company.

Since then, PayPal has expanded far beyond its original online-payment role into digital wallets, merchant checkout, money transfer, enterprise payments and financial services.

PayPal’s business now serves both consumers and merchants.

Consumers can use PayPal for online and mobile payments, money transfers and selected financial services, while businesses can accept payments and manage commerce through PayPal’s merchant solutions.

Braintree, its enterprise payments platform, supports PayPal alongside cards, digital wallets and other local payment methods, giving larger businesses a broader checkout infrastructure.

Venmo and the Consumer Wallet

Venmo is another major part of PayPal’s consumer ecosystem.

Focused primarily on the United States, Venmo combines person-to-person payments with merchant checkout, debit and credit products, and in-store payment capabilities.

PayPal reported approximately 100 million active Venmo accounts in its current merchant materials, highlighting the scale of the platform within the U.S. market.

Preparing for AI-Powered Commerce

Artificial intelligence is becoming an important part of PayPal’s future strategy.

Its agentic commerce services allow merchants to make products discoverable through AI shopping experiences while supporting product search, cart management and checkout.

PayPal’s Agent Ready technology also enables eligible Braintree merchants to accept payments initiated through AI assistants without building separate payment integrations for every platform.

This positions PayPal not simply as a checkout provider, but as part of the infrastructure behind emerging AI-driven commerce.

PayPal World and Cross-Border Wallets

Cross-border payments are another area of expansion.

PayPal World connects PayPal and Venmo with participating global payment systems and digital wallets through a shared platform.

Its network includes NPCI International Payments Limited’s UPI in India and Tenpay Global in China, alongside Mercado Pago in Latin America. The aim is to make international shopping and money movement easier without requiring consumers to adopt unfamiliar payment systems.

A Strong Presence Across Asia Pacific

Asia Pacific is an important part of PayPal’s international network.

PayPal services are available across markets including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and other parts of the region.

PayPal Pte. Ltd. in Singapore serves as an important international operating entity for markets including Japan and numerous other countries outside the United States.

PayPal World’s connections with Indian and Chinese payment ecosystems also strengthen Asia’s role in the company’s cross-border strategy.

Global Scale

In 2025, PayPal processed approximately US$1.79 trillion in total payment volume, representing 7% growth from 2024.

The platform processed 25.4 billion payment transactions and finished the year with 439 million active accounts. Net revenue reached approximately US$33.17 billion.

Growth continued into 2026.

For the second quarter ended June 30, PayPal reported:

  • US$8.68 billion in net revenue
  • US$486.4 billion in total payment volume
  • 6.75 billion payment transactions
  • 439 million active accounts

A New Leadership Chapter

PayPal entered a new leadership phase in 2026 under President and CEO Enrique Lores.

The company is focusing on strengthening its core PayPal checkout business while developing Venmo, Braintree, financial services and AI-enabled commerce.

Lores has described PayPal’s scale, technology and access to hundreds of millions of active accounts as foundations for its next stage of growth.
