About Tesla
Tesla is a technology and manufacturing company best known for electric vehicles, battery energy storage, charging infrastructure, artificial intelligence and autonomous-driving technology.
Incorporated in 2003, Tesla initially set out to demonstrate that electric vehicles could combine performance, range and everyday usability. Its activities now extend well beyond automobiles into energy storage, charging networks, robotics and AI-powered mobility.
From the Roadster to Mass-Market Electric Vehicles

Tesla’s first production vehicle, the Roadster, debuted in 2008 and demonstrated that a fully electric sports car could deliver strong performance without a conventional combustion engine.
It was followed by the Model S in 2012, Model X in 2015 and Model 3 deliveries beginning in 2017. Model Y later became another major part of Tesla’s global vehicle business.
This expansion helped move electric vehicles from a specialist category toward a more mainstream part of the global automotive industry.
Building Vehicles Around Software
Tesla approaches vehicles as both physical products and software platforms.
Its cars receive over-the-air software updates, allowing functions and interfaces to be improved after delivery. The company has also developed its own AI inference hardware and software for driver-assistance technology.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised) uses cameras and neural-network-based systems to perform many driving tasks, although Tesla states that currently enabled features still require active driver supervision and do not make customer vehicles autonomous.
This distinction remains important as Tesla develops increasingly advanced autonomous-driving systems.
Robotaxi and the Push Toward Autonomy

Autonomous transportation has become one of Tesla’s major strategic priorities.
Tesla now operates Robotaxi services in selected U.S. cities, using autonomous Tesla vehicles through a dedicated ride-hailing platform. Its purpose-built Cybercab is designed for autonomous operation without conventional steering-wheel or pedal controls.
The company is also developing the Robovan for larger groups and goods transportation.
Tesla’s longer-term vision is to combine electric vehicles with AI to create transportation systems capable of operating with significantly less direct human involvement.
From Cars to AI and Robotics
Tesla increasingly describes itself as an AI and robotics company as well as an automaker.
Its Optimus humanoid robot is being developed to perform repetitive, unsafe or physically demanding tasks. Many of the technologies required for Optimus — including perception, neural networks, planning and AI inference — build on systems Tesla originally developed for vehicles.
This gives Tesla an unusual technology strategy in which electric vehicles, autonomous driving and humanoid robotics share elements of the same AI infrastructure.
Building a Global Charging Network
Charging infrastructure has been another important part of Tesla’s ecosystem.
Tesla now operates more than 80,000 Superchargers globally, creating one of the world’s largest fast-charging networks.
The network allows vehicles to automatically communicate with charging stations, while the Tesla app provides information on availability and charging progress.
Tesla has also expanded Supercharger access to vehicles from other manufacturers in selected markets, extending the network beyond Tesla owners.
Energy Beyond Electric Vehicles
Tesla’s energy business has become increasingly important alongside its automotive operations.
Its products include Powerwall, designed for residential energy storage, and Megapack, a large-scale battery system designed for utilities, commercial facilities and renewable-energy projects.
In 2025, Tesla deployed a record 46.7 GWh of energy storage products, reflecting rapid growth in demand for battery storage.
The business is increasingly relevant as renewable energy and AI-driven electricity demand create greater need for large-scale energy storage and grid stability.
Asia as a Manufacturing and Growth Hub
Asia plays a significant role in Tesla’s global manufacturing and supply network.
Gigafactory Shanghai, Tesla’s first factory outside the United States, manufactures Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
Tesla has also developed Megafactory Shanghai for Megapack production. The facility has a current annual capacity of approximately 20 GWh, with Tesla stating that capacity can potentially be doubled to 40 GWh.
Beyond China, Tesla operates across markets including Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia, supported by an expanding network of stores, service centres and Superchargers.
Asia therefore plays a role not only in Tesla’s vehicle market, but also in its manufacturing, energy and infrastructure strategy.
Global Scale in 2026
Tesla delivered approximately 1.64 million vehicles during 2025 and generated total annual revenue of approximately US$94.8 billion.
Growth accelerated during parts of 2026. In the second quarter, Tesla recorded US$28.24 billion in revenue, up 26% from the same period a year earlier, while delivering 480,126 vehicles.
The latest production update, released on October 2, 2026, reported more than 486,000 vehicle deliveries and 13.7 GWh of energy storage deployments in Q3 2026. Tesla’s Q3 financial results are scheduled for October 21, 2026, so they are not yet included here.
