About Toyota

Toyota is one of the world’s leading automotive companies, known for combining large-scale manufacturing with a long-standing focus on quality, efficiency, reliability and continuous improvement.

Toyota Motor Corporation was founded on 28 August 1937 and is headquartered in Toyota City, Japan. As of March 2026, the company reported approximately 390,927 employees on a consolidated basis, reflecting the scale of its global operations.

Today, Toyota’s activities extend beyond conventional automobiles into electrified vehicles, software, automated driving, connected mobility, hydrogen technology and new forms of transportation.

From Japanese Manufacturing to a Global Automotive Brand

Toyota’s automotive origins can be traced to Kiichiro Toyoda, who began researching automobile manufacturing after the Toyoda family’s earlier success in automatic looms and industrial machinery.

An automotive division was established within Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in 1933. The Model AA passenger car followed in 1936, before Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. was formally established in 1937.

Toyota gradually expanded from domestic production into international markets. Models such as the Land Cruiser, introduced in the early 1950s, and the Corolla, launched in 1966, became important parts of the company’s international growth.

Over the decades, Toyota developed manufacturing, research and sales operations across Asia, North America, Europe and other major markets, transforming a Japanese manufacturer into one of the most globally recognised automotive brands.

The Toyota Production System

A major part of Toyota’s influence extends beyond the vehicles themselves.

The Toyota Production System (TPS) was developed around improving efficiency, eliminating unnecessary waste and producing what is needed at the appropriate time.

Two ideas became closely associated with the system: Just-in-Time, which focuses on producing and supplying items according to actual demand, and jidoka, which builds quality control into the production process.

Toyota traces elements of this philosophy back to the automatic loom developed by Sakichi Toyoda and the manufacturing concepts later advanced by Kiichiro Toyoda.

The wider principle of kaizen, or continuous improvement, has also become strongly associated with Toyota. Rather than treating improvement as a one-time process, the philosophy encourages employees and organisations to continually identify better ways of working.

These ideas have helped Toyota influence manufacturing practices far beyond the automotive industry.

Changing the Direction of Electrified Mobility

Toyota also played an important role in bringing hybrid vehicles into mainstream automotive use.

In 1997, the company launched the first-generation Toyota Prius, recognised by Toyota as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle. It combined a petrol engine with electric motors to improve fuel efficiency and recover energy that would otherwise be lost while driving.

The technology developed for the Prius subsequently expanded across a much wider range of Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

Rather than concentrating on only one type of powertrain, Toyota has pursued what it calls a multi-pathway approach to carbon reduction. This includes hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, with different technologies positioned according to infrastructure, energy conditions and customer requirements in different markets.

Toyota is also developing next-generation battery technologies, including higher-performance lithium-ion batteries and solid-state batteries, as part of its longer-term battery electric vehicle strategy.

From Car Company to Mobility Company

Toyota’s transformation increasingly extends beyond manufacturing cars.

The company first publicly declared its ambition to evolve into a mobility company in 2018. This broader approach considers mobility not simply as vehicles, but as the movement of people, goods, information and energy.

One of the clearest examples is Toyota Woven City, located in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

Officially launched in September 2025, Woven City operates as a real-world test environment where Toyota, technology companies, startups, researchers and residents can develop and evaluate new mobility products and services.

Projects can extend beyond automobiles to areas including automated mobility, artificial intelligence, robotics, logistics, energy and connected living.

In April 2026, Toyota and Woven by Toyota also unveiled new AI technologies for Woven City, including the Woven City AI Vision Engine, demonstrating how artificial intelligence is becoming part of Toyota’s wider mobility development.

Software and Intelligent Vehicles

As vehicles become increasingly software-defined, Toyota is investing in technologies that connect hardware, digital services and vehicle intelligence.

Woven by Toyota, Toyota’s mobility technology company, is developing technologies including automated driving systems and Arene, a software development platform intended to support intelligent vehicles and accelerate automotive software development.

This represents an important shift for Toyota.

The company’s future competitiveness is increasingly based not only on manufacturing engines, batteries and vehicle platforms, but also on software, data, artificial intelligence and connected services.

Global Scale With Japanese Roots

Despite its international scale, Toyota remains strongly connected to its Japanese manufacturing heritage.

Its headquarters and major research, engineering and production facilities remain in Japan, while the company operates an extensive international network serving customers around the world.

For the fiscal year ended 31 March 2026, Toyota reported Β₯50.68 trillion in consolidated sales revenue and approximately Β₯3.77 trillion in operating income.

Toyota’s consolidated vehicle sales reached approximately 9.60 million units during the same fiscal year, including more than 7.5 million units sold outside Japan.

The scale of these operations demonstrates Toyota’s position not simply as a Japanese automotive company, but as a major participant in the global mobility industry.

A Brand Built Around Continuous Improvement

Toyota’s identity has traditionally been associated with durability, manufacturing discipline and practical engineering.

However, the brand has continued to evolve as the automotive industry enters a period shaped by electrification, artificial intelligence, software-defined vehicles, autonomous systems and changing energy infrastructure.

Toyota’s response combines new technologies with principles that have existed throughout much of its history: improving quality, reducing waste, understanding customer needs and continuously searching for better solutions.

Its corporate philosophy expresses this idea through a simple principle: there is always a better way.

Why Toyota Is Featured on ASIA Best Brands

Toyota represents one of Asia’s most significant examples of a locally founded manufacturer becoming a globally influential brand.

From the Toyota Production System and the mass adoption of hybrid technology to its current development of electric vehicles, hydrogen solutions, software, artificial intelligence and future mobility, Toyota’s influence extends well beyond automobile manufacturing.

Its journey also demonstrates how Japanese engineering principles such as quality, efficiency and continuous improvement can develop into globally recognised business practices.

With nearly nine decades of automotive history, extensive international operations and an expanding vision of mobility, Toyota remains one of the defining Asian brands shaping the evolution of global transportation.
